Mentoring
Training … Making
a Difference for Others
Serving as a mentor is a serious endeavor that cannot be taken lightly. It also is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life. Our Mentor Training helps prepare adults who are committed to working with youths.
Volunteer mentors come from all different walks of life. Past mentors have been housewives, accountants, executives, retirees, plumbers, and college students. Mentor workshops are designed to train and prepare volunteers who have made a commitment to work with youth. Our program is of special benefit to those who have no prior experience working with young people. It also enhances the skills of those who are professionals in the field.
Workshop participants learn essential elements for mentoring, such as coaching techniques and how to build constructive relationships with their mentee. Participants will learn how to guide their mentee, and help him/her establish, follow through and achieve his/her goals. The workshop also addresses potential problems that may arise and how to successfully resolve them.
The workshops will prepare volunteers and help them develop a mutually fulfilling relationship with their mentees. Mentors will also gain:
- A clear understanding of their role and goals as mentor.
- Confidence in their ability to carry out their volunteer commitment.
- An appreciation for youth and their unique needs.
- A better understanding and appreciation for the diversity of the youth.
- Awareness of what they can contribute to youth.
- Knowledge of the support and resources available to volunteers.
- A sense of “ownership” of the volunteer program.
- Greater understanding of the mission and goals of the sponsoring organization.
- A sense of teamwork among volunteers.
